In 1998 at the height of the big beat revolution being spearheaded by Skint Records Fatboy Slim, Bentley Rhythm Ace and the Lo Fi's were enjoying huge success both in the charts and topping the bills at venues and festivals. It was a heady time for Skint's big artists but it did make it difficult for the label to develop cool underground acts without the spotlight being thrust upon them too soon.
And so Skint with very little fanfare quietly launched the Under Five's label with the aim of releasing interesting, sometimes quirky records that didn't fit the roster of the Skint label. No big marketing plan, just great tunes for people to discover just like in the early days of Skint itself.
